Stuart Marwick appeared as one of the guest artists in the June 2 concert The Resting Place of Pioneers, created and performed by the Toronto Choral Society. Resting Place is a new work o historical fiction, in song and story, celebrating the pioneers ofearly 19th-century Toronto who were buried in Potter’s Field. Stuart and seven other writers were commissioned to create fictional histories inspired by any name in the burial record. Stuart chose Jonathan Wilcox (1836–1854), who fell to his death from a scaffold. Stuart was one of three narrators who read the eight stories, each matched with appropriate music, arranged and conducted by TCS artistic director Geoffrey Butler.
Estelle Craig has presented Ryerson University with the Stella Award, which is to be presented to an adult/50+ playwright who has created a winning original play.

Patricia Howard's exhibition "Recent Watercolours and Portrait Drawings" opens on Monday, September 13 and runs until December 10. The show is at the University of Toronto's Academic Retiree Centre, 256 McCaul St., Suite 412 (just south of College). Hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The work of several Club members was exhibited in the Society of Canadian Artists’ 42nd Annual Juried Exhibition, July 7–18, 2010, at the Papermill Gallery, Todmorden Mills: Zora Buchanan, Eva Gerold, Marvyne Jenoff, Julian Mulock, Tina Newlove, Lucie Simons and Andrew Sookrah. One of the jurors was Andrew Benyei. The show was organized by Andrew Sookrah with assistance from Julian Mulock.

R.B. (Rae) Fleming’s biography of Peter Gzowski is now in bookstores. This is Rae’s third biography, and the toughest thus far. The book is filled with familiar names from the arts throughout the last half of the twentieth century, some of whom were/are members of the Club. Margaret McBurney was a room-mate of Jennie Lissaman, Peter’s future wife. Ezra Schabas also makes an appearance in the book as do Andy Donato and R.H. Thomson. The biography was published by Dundurn Press, whose CEO is Kirk Howard.
Heidi Burkhardt and Tony Batten will be taking part in an expedition to sketch and explore Tuscany in September. Under the auspices of the Italian Consulate in Toronto, the group will be hosting an exhibition in Spoleto of Canadianthemed paintings.
David Chesterton has self-published his third book, a biography. Pigmented Spectacles records the life of Dr. Ian Ayrton Earle Kirby,St. Vincent’s veterinarian and self-taught archeologist. “I enjoyed
working on the book and meeting Earle’s friends from all over the world,” David said, “But can’t wait to get back to my mysteries where people and events are made up as I go along.”
Kay Montgomery is set to appear in her fourth Noël Coward play, Present Laughter, in the role of Monica. The play will open at the Village Playhouse (Bloor West Village) on Friday, Sept. 17, and run until Saturday, Oct. 9. Full details: www.villageplayers.net; Box Office 416-767-7702.

John A. Libby Fine Art will be holding a retrospective and sale of works by former A&L member Fred S. Haines (1879–1960), member from 1911 –1960 and President from 1947–1949. “A Genius Overlooked,” Haines was extremely active his entire life with art societies. He is one of only five men to have been President of both the Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal Canadian Academy. He was head of the Art Gallery of Ontario and went on to become the principal of the Ontario College of Art. The retrospective opens on Oct. 2 at 463 King Street East, Toronto.
Congratulations are in order to Les Tibbles and William Vaisey, who were recognized as having attained Life Member status at the Club’s Annual Meeting held in June. Congratulations are also
long overdue to Past President Pat Hume, John Lawson, Gordon Peters, Gerry Sevier and Cal Wilson, whose achievement in reaching the Life Member milestone of 45 years’ Club membership was recognized at the 2009 Annual Meeting.
